Lila Dupont:
At just 18-years-old, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Lila Dupont is the kind of musical visionary capable of building entire worlds from the most nuanced expression. Made with Grammy Award-winning producer/writer/engineer Scott Jacoby (Coldplay, Janelle Monae, Vampire Weekend), Lila’s debut body of work reveals a self-possessed artist on the cusp of an extraordinary career, bringing her captivating voice and vast imagination to songs with a spellbinding power. Raised in New York City and born into a highly creative family (her father is sculptor/installation artist Richard Dupont), Lila began playing piano as a little girl and taught herself guitar and ukulele in her early teens. Although she wrote her first handful of songs around that time, it wasn’t until her family moved out of the city at the start of the pandemic that she fully immersed herself in songwriting. “There was a big empty room in the house we’d rented, and I’d just sit there and write song after song—I became completely obsessed,” she recalls. Naming folk singer/songwriters like Gregory Alan Isakov and underground artists like Haley Heynderickx among her main inspirations, Lila soon came up with over 60 songs charged with a raw emotional depth. “When I started writing I was mostly making up scenarios in my head, but quarantine was the first time I actually used my music to really examine the things I was feeling and going through,” she notes. As she continued amassing a whole repertoire of songs, Lila expanded her musical knowledge by enrolling in an advanced-placement music theory class and experimenting with self-recording, then began sharing her music online. She quickly caught the attention of Jacoby, who signed Lila to his label Eusonia Records and set to work on producing her first proper release.
Recorded with musicians like drummer JT Bates (Taylor Swift, Maren Morris), bassist Mike Lewis (Bon Iver, Andrew Bird), and guitarist Eli Menezes (Lauryn Hill, Rita Ora), Lila’s debut batch of singles precisely channel the endless confusion of coming of age, an element compounded by the intense isolation and uncertainty of quarantine. On “Realize It All,” she speaks to the loneliness of trying to hide your emotional pain, adorning the track’s wildly crashing chorus with her fragile and fluttering vocal work. “‘Realize It All’ is about wanting to look like everything’s all right, even though you’re really struggling inwardly,” says Lila. “It’s about how you don’t have to let yourself to get to your lowest point for anyone to care—you can just let it all out.” Sparked from a melody that emerged while messing around on an old guitar in her grandparents’ garage, “Everything You Do” evolved into a gorgeously warped piece of doo-wop, graced with radiant harmonies and a slow- burning guitar solo. “That song came from an internal battle I’ve had with myself, where I feel like I could’ve explored my identity more and taken more risks when I was younger,” says Lila. “It’s about recognizing that I could be a totally different person now, but trying to accept everything for what it is.” And on “Just My Luck,” Lila presents a piano-laced meditation on desperation and despair, reaching a glorious urgency at the song’s epic bridge. “I feel like I experienced so much growth in the process of making that song,” she points out. “We didn’t have the bridge yet, and I was sitting at the piano and Scott told me to play around a bit. I had no idea what to do, but I ended up finding that chord progression, and we turned into this huge orchestral moment. That’s definitely one of my favorite memories of being in the studio.
”Now living in the UK, Lila is at work on a debut album that lets listeners deeper into her inner world. “I tend to write when I’m at some kind of emotional peak, whether I’m feeling sad or angry or anxious, or if I have an insane burst of happiness,” she says. “All these songs are incredibly personal, but I tried to write them in a way that allows people to interpret them however they want and fit them into their own lives, because that’s what I’ve always done with the music I love.”
