Words By: Liz Giegerich Photos by: Marc Millman Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews and his band Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue commanded a packed crowd at The Capitol Theatre with an energetic mix of rock, jazz, blues, and funk on Saturday, March 22. After London Souls warmed up the crowd with their own funky rock jams, including a cover of The Beatles' "Get Back" to close, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue took the stage.

Troy Andrews's charisma, energy and sensational talent is supported by brilliant band members Dan Oestreicher on the baritone base, Joey Peebles on drums, Tim Mcfatter on saxophone, Michael "Bass" Ballard on bass and Pete Murano on guitar.

They played hits like "Backatown" and "Hurricane Season" from their 2010 album "Backatown" and from "Say That to This," their latest album released in September of last year.

Andrews, a 28-year-old New Orleans native, drew extra applause when he asked Oestreicher to school the crowd on how to properly second-line halfway through the show. The band also played New Orleans favorites and a funky rendition of Cab Calloway's classic "Hi De Ho." The band nodded to Andrews' childhood neighborhood singing a quick verse of John Boutte's "Treme" song used in the credits of the HBO series of the same name.

Each musician impressed the crowd with solos until drummer Peebles was left on stage by himself for an extended and mesmerizing drum solo towards the end of the set. Also towards the end, Andrews held out his trombone and trumpet, in his signature, crossed above his head before joining the crowd on the floor to close the show.
