reCAP :: The Wailers w/ DJ Blowout :: 2016.02.11
“One good thing about music, when it hits you you feel no pain…” -Bob Marley
The music of Bob Marley & The Wailers is timeless. The Rastafarian frontman’s life and music is his legacy, and it's shined on from generation to generation. He lived love, and loved life and that sentiment has been carried by the current touring incarnation of The Wailers. In this time of uncertainty and chaos in the world, it was so refreshing to watch the reggae legends perform an epic setlist at The Cap on Feb. 11 and warm our spirits despite temperatures dipping into the teens outside.
With a crowd ranging from 18 year olds to the senior circuit, the current incarnation of the iconic reggae band moved through the hits with procession from “Buffalo Soldier” to “Three Little Birds," and encouraged the crowd to speak out against injustice and to keep the peace with a sort of "love all, serve all" kind of way. And this audience at The Cap responded, singing and dancing along to hits like “Could You Be Loved?,” “Jammin’,” and a get-out-your-lighters stripped down “Redemption Song.” The songs resonate. Never have they not and Bob's been gone for decades now.
The roster of Wailers changes through time, but never loses any sense of authenticity. This isn’t a cover band nor does it ever feel that way. Currently, original member /bassist Aston Barnett is joined by son Aston Jr.,on organ;, Anthony “Benbow” Creary is on drums and the guitarists are Audley “Chizzy” Chisholm, Joshua David and Melvin “Ras Mel” Glover. Chaka Taylor plays keyboards, and Dwayne “Danglin” Anglin shares vocal duties with Cegeee Victory. The newbies satisfy your soul like the ones who stood in red, green and yellow before.
The Wailers are The Wailers no matter who is in the band. It’s a machine that runs off its timeless, heartfelt music. Good music lasts forever. It hits you. It hurts you. It helps you. It heals you. It does everything. With a sense of irie, The Wailers made every little thing alright at The Cap Thursday night.
