The Kids In The Hall brought their offbeat brand of humor to The Capitol Theater this past Saturday, May 2nd for a hilarious night of sketch comedy. Cast members Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson performed a combination of classic sketches and new ones to the delight of the raucous crowd, proving time hasn’t softened the Canadian comedy troupe.
The show started the way one would expect a Kids show to start, with all five cast members in dresses – wedding dresses to be precise. Discoursing on why they wear wedding dresses, McCulloch took a typically bleak stance (“I wear wedding dresses to hold a mirror up to society”) while McKinney admitted to wearing one of his own to his sister’s wedding (“She wasn’t happy”). This led into a wonderfully awkward opening monologue/song by McDonald, in which he wondered how many people in the crowd were there “because their 41-year-old boyfriend dragged them along?”
But don’t be fooled into thinking that time has turned the Kids into crotchety old men – they’re still behaving badly as ever. In fact, the quintet appeared to relish their status as elder statesmen while poking fun at it at simultaneously. They proved throughout the night that they’re not above making jokes about wife-swapping, bodily fluids, or the Baltimore riots (“Yeah, way too soon”). And don’t worry, Foley reminded us that he hasn’t lost his affinity for “female menstruation.”
Some of the classic sketches the group recreated included “The Southern Doctor” and “Salty Ham.” McCulloch brought out Gavin and Thompson treated us to an appearance by Running F@#$%^. But the group saved the best bit for last as the Head Crusher made an appearance with a camera hooked up to the back screen. After turning his camera on the audience, he roasted each of the Kids before crushing their heads one-by-one. Lastly, he turned the camera on himself, remarking on how he couldn’t get invited to the SNL 40th Anniversary before crushing his own head to end the show.
