Norah Jones ended her fall tour at The Capitol Theater this past Sunday. She performed her classics from the early 2000’s before a sold out crowd. The nine-time Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter began the show behind a piano, belting out her sultry songs, with her enchanting pitch perfect voice.
Ms. Jones, the daughter of Ravi Shankar, sang her favorites a bit off tempo, to confound and amuse the audience. I was happy to hear that she didn’t play her songs note for note, as some acts do. The show was fresh, in that sense.
Jones’ style is really a mix of jazz, country and lounge, if you could imagine. But the music comes across as dreamy with a strong foundation in songwriting. “I’ve Got to See You Again” had a gorgeous moment between her and Pete Remm on the Hammond organ in the middle of the song which brought overwhelming cheers from the audience. I had goosebumps for the first time of the night.
Jones’ had a relaxed banter with the crowd. She commented on this being their last night of the tour, and how they had some very rowdy audiences. She also confessed she liked audiences that were drunk, but not that drunk. As she said, “there IS a line.” She introduced her next song, which came out five years ago called “Black.” The crowd again erupted in applause.
Jones told us that her bassist, Josh Lattanzi, has a plethora of musical knowledge, and she pointed out that forty five years ago, November 8, 1970, The Grateful Dead played here at The Capitol. With that said, she sang an acoustic “It Must’ve Been the Roses,” in honor of Jerry and the band.
A multi-instrumentalist, Norah Jones bounced back and forth between the piano, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and the electric keyboards effortlessly. The pace of the show started sexy and slow, and evolved into a rock and roll show, as her guitarist Jason Roberts ripped into a furious jam. Markedly, one of the highlights of the night.
Jones ended the evening with her classic, “Come Away With Me in the Night.” She played a three song encore, and the crowd loved every minute of it. I hope that Jones comes back to The Capitol Theatre with some new material on her next tour.
