“McCain, the world’s oldest man, chose the world’s stupidest woman as a running mate.” – Bill Maher
The Cap offers so much more than its plentiful and varied musical offerings. On June 21st, 2014 the iconic venue presented a sold-out evening of endless laughs delivered by controversial comic Bill Maher.
Maher, who started as a stand up comedian in 1979, has been prolific as a television host, political commentator, satirist, author and actor. Born in New York City and raised locally in New Jersey, he shared bountiful one-liners and thoughtful anecdotes about a variety of hot topics in his patented confident and informed manner complete with his signature sarcastic condescension. Maher, best known for his current HBO TV smash, Real Time with Bill Maher, and formerly for the successful run of Politically Incorrect, is impressively ranked #38 on Comedy Central’s greatest comedians of all-time. He gained further notoriety with the release of his 2008 documentary film Religulous. He has been nominated for 22 Emmy Awards.
His political satire covered a myriad of subjects including his ardent support of marijuana legalization, same-sex marriage, religious and his consistent bashing of the Right. Maher’s voice served up a lesson: “beliefs and elections have consequences.” A member of the Board of PETA, a fervent environmentalist, an atheist, a supporter of the Affordable Health Care Act and a self-described “liberal” or “libertarian”, Maher is not afraid to vehemently defend his personal opinions in his act and is quick to include a litany of verifiable facts to support his position. On this night he tackled a bevy of subjects including Ted Cruz, Mitt Romney, Bill O’Reilly, fake breasts, Iraq, the defense budget and a heavy handed humorous take on religion as he deems belief in “imaginary friends” a “comedy-rich target’. To witness the cerebral comic perform a stand-up show was a rare and satisfying treat.
