12 of the Funniest New York Area 1980s Commercials That Will Make You Smile
As children of the 1980s, we remember being fascinated by the commercials that appeared upon our television, transporting us to the top of a roller coaster at the Westchester County Fair, or coming into our living rooms to bring us lush carpets, right before our eyes. These are the commercials that became forever ingrained in our consciousness. In honor of our Turn Back The Cap: 1980s show featuring Jessie's Girl and DJ Dee Wiz, we're taking a gloriously nostalgic look back at the funniest New York area 1980s commercials.
1. PSA: We're Not Candy
Just in case you were confused, those talking pills are not candy. This educational PSA informed families in Westchester and Fairfield County that The Long Island Regional Poison Control Center was there to help. The Long Island Regional Poison Control Center had a clever and catchy way to promote the side effects of prescription drugs, and their 1983 PSA included singing blue pills with a serious message, they can make you delirious. Busta Rhymes used lyrics from this PSA in his 1997 hit song "Dangerous."

What better way to exemplify a fun, positive atmosphere than with a talking smiley face balloon, really? These commercials enticed children from Westchester County, New York City, Long Island, and New Jersey to beg their parents for a summer of fun. The camp is still open today, but has since revamped their commercials.

One of the most recognized jingles today is still Empire Carpets' 588-2300 Empire catchphrase. The first time the jingle aired was in 1977, and along with the jingle, the Empire Man made his own appearance. Although the Empire Man is now an animated character, he can still cure all your carpet needs with 7 digits.

D' Agostino spread to Manhattan's West Side in the 1970s, and issued extra large white plastic bags that had "D'Ag Bags" written on them as publicity. Along with the new bag, D' Agostino had the peppy jingle "Mr. D' Agostino, Please Move Closer to Me" recorded in the 1970s. The commercial went on to air during the 1980s, and hungry people on couches ran to one of their locations in New York City or Westchester County.

For those who grew up in Westchester County in the 80s and 90s, the official start of summer was when the Westchester County Fair commercials began to air. The fair took place at Yonkers Raceway from the end of May through early June, and non-stop rides, animals, farmers, and live country music was plentiful. Unfortunately today the fair no longer takes place.

To raise awareness of the Children's Aid Society, an organization that helps local children in New York's poverty areas thrive, a clever commercial with an even more brilliant jingle was created. The catchy commercial did the trick in informing Westchester and Fairfield County about an organization close to home. You'll be really glad they made the Children's Aid Society after just one watch.

This classic 1986 commercial features a group of immigrants, from countries like China, Italy, Poland, and, don't forget about Yonkers, pitching in $1.00 in hopes of winning the jackpot! Guess what? They hit it! We're guessing their still working because they love their jobs.

For Westchester and Fairfield County patrons looking to spend an overnight in New York City, Milford Plaza was at the center of it all. Milford Plaza's catchy tune was written by Harry Warren, with lyrics by Al Dubin. Warren was the first major American songwriter to write primarily for film. Warren went on to win an Oscar for this unforgettable composition. You can still stay at the Lullaby of Broadway under its new name Row NYC.

Carvel states that Cookie Puss, originally known as "Celestial Person," is a space alien who was born on planet Birthday. With the ability to fly, and the help from a saucer-shaped spacecraft, Cookie Puss can travel the universe, making stops at different planets along the way. Cookie Puss was also the focus of the Beastie Boys' debut single, "Cooky Puss." The group members would prank call a Carvel location asking to speak with the notorious Cookie Puss.

ShopRite's first Can Can sale launch was 44 years ago, and today, it's still a huge hit among shoppers. ShopRite’s Can Can Sale estimates that it has sold more than 3 billion cans over the sale’s history. Today, this catchy jingle still lives on.

The song struck syndrome force is strong with the Mount Airy Lodge commercials. Featuring different original jingles, these catchy commercials did not quite. Mount Airy Lodge's close proximity to Westchester and Fairfield County made it the perfect getaway for honeymooners. The lodge had floor-to-ceiling mirrors, velvet-swagged canopy beds, and heart-shaped bathtubs. Unfortunately, this all-inclusive resort closed down in 2001, and in 2007, Mount Airy Casino Resort took its place.
