Six weeks before the world would be changed by a global pandemic, Gary Clark Jr. was joined on-stage by The Roots for one of the greatest on-screen performances ever at the 2020 Grammys. He also received three Grammy awards for Best Rock Song, Contemporary Blues Album, and Rock Performance for his 2019 album, This Land.

We love when a live performance is so good that we forget what it sounded like on the album. “Ain’t Messin’ ‘Round” was the lead-off track on Clark’s debut album and it’s the horn section that first catches the listener’s attention. In this performance, Clark brilliantly substitutes his own lead guitar for the album version’s horn section making it tough to go back to after hearing this sensational live recording.

Albert King’s “Born Under a Bad Sign” was once called “a timeless staple of the blues.” History has proven that correct and it was John Mayer who inducted Albert King into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. In this performance, we see Gary Clark Jr and Mayer paying tribute to the late-great Albert King as they trade guitar solos on one of the greatest blues tracks ever made.
